Suva City Council is the Capital City Council and is responsible for the Commercial, Financial and Cultural hurb of the Greater Suva Area.

Suva City Council is a non-profit making organization and it gets its activities through the implementation of a range of services, programs & initiatives directed to residents, businesses and visitors.

Suva city Council has powers in different domains. The Council is given certain rights by the Government law such as to enact ordinances designed to protect the lives, property, health & morals of the citizens.

Within this category are the ordinances of regulating traffics on streets, establishment of rules for prevention of fire, setting standards for building constructions, conduct open place of amusement & providing sanitary regulations.

Councillors & Members

The City of Suva has 20 Councillors including the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor. The Councillors are elected democratically to represent the community. The current team was elected in October 2002. The term of the Council will end in toward the end of year 2005, when fresh elections will be held.
They are elected by residents, owners of rateable property, occupiers of rateable property, and representatives of corporations that own or occupy rateable property in the City of Suva.
Councillors work with a huge range of individuals and groups including residents, businesses, the right government and the Council’s administration to help them make informed decisions on the vast array of issues that affect its capital city municipality.
